I am an Epicaric Virago! I don't fear the pain, I eat it up! I don't need you to bring it to me, the whip is in my hand and singing my Geisslerlieder like a Wagnerian opera, I will bring it on myself! Can you say the same?

I am an Epicaric Virago! I do not need to beat you in order to feel like I have won. I find my challenge by lifting you up and allowing you to be weak so that you can bring on and savor your own pain. I know that strength is tested at the foundations, and so I build groups that can not and will not abandon each other. Can you say the same?

I am an Epicaric Virago! I play right out on the precipice where the ground gives away. Love, death, violence, power, sex, betrayal and the foul rag and bone shop of the human heart: I want it all! Vividly! Viscerally! Nothing is verboten because I trust that we can recover each other. Can you say the same?

I am an Epicaric Virago! I am no stoic. I am open and affected and emotionally engaged by and with this: I breathe, I scream, I hurt, I fuck, I fight and I cry along with it before I step back and marvel at the exquisite badness that we have wrought together. It is not something I watch, it is something I AM for a time. I know that it can change me just like I can change it. Can you say the same?

I am an Epicaric Virago! I'm no wallflower or a shrinking violet: I hunt down the pain and joy, the sound and the fury. I am the Mistress of the tragic flaw. Can you say the same?

And here I thought it was not only a credo of his own but a kind of call to arms for others to identify their own credo and put to words what they like at the gaming table.

    But maybe I didn't understand.

Cool! Sounds pretty much the same thing to me, though.

What do "Epicaric" and "Virago" mean?

This sounds like we're one step away from finding, say, three more creedos then making one of them online "Which Creedo are you" tests...

It's not gonna be me, but still.

Epicaric = schaedenfreude = taking pleasure in the suffering of another. (In this case a character.)

Virago = Heroic or strong woman, in the 19th century came to be used as "herridan" or "nag" and was reclaimed by the feminist movement of the mid 60's but is still mostly out of vogue due to Victorian connotations.

P.S. I did understand what Tony was doing, and I also understand this post.

Hmm. I initially read this as yet another diss on the ¡Muy Macho! credo. ¡Muy Macho! gets a little defensive, y'know? If it is a serious statement of what you're into, then more power to ya.

    Thanks for the translation, Brand.

It's as serious as Tony's thread. And as not serious.

Naw, no diss, in fact it's what I did specifically not to diss on the iMuy Macho! thread.

    Pretty much, yeah.
