Can't wait until GenCon (or for your pre-order to arrive) to crack open a copy of It's Complicated? Not a problem.

Now available is a completely special online edition, tailored specifically for people who prefer to read their texts and play their games online. The online edition is actually a two-part bundle. For $13, you get:

    * A full-functionality PDF, with a table of contents you can actually use on the computer-- just click on the chapter you want to go to, and it will take you there. The game is 40 pages long, and there's 15 extensive sticky notes giving further examples and elaborating on game concepts, as well as giving unofficial advice and variations on the rules that I sometimes use when I'm just playing with friends. (That stuff isn't even in the print version.) Not only that, but the text is full of clickable weblinks-- so if you're not familiar with media that I've used for examples, you can go read synopses of them. Even the ads at the back of the PDF will take you directly to the creators' websites.

Along with that, you also get a great java application which automates filling out the game board-- it's perfect for online play. The graphic interface is simple, easy to understand, and even exports the gameboard for upload onto a site like imageshack, or for printing. The vast majority of the playtesting for IC happened on IRC-- it's great for casual play and pick-up games, and the java app is absolutely invaluable for that. You can order the Online Play Edition now, and you'll get it in your inbox as soon as I get the email.

If you're looking for the basic PDF, you can get it for a mere eight bucks. No links, no notes, not bundled with the java app.

If you want to know more about It's Complicated, you can check out my blog or the preorder thread here on Story Games.

I should say, the notes and stuff probably require Acrobat Reader; I know they won't show up in Preview. You can download Reader for free at the Adobe website, but I think everyone knows that. Preview still allows you to use the navigational links in the table of contents, however.

I was explaining this to a friend of mine yesterday, and she wanted to know how the note thing works, so here's a screenshot example:

    Hi Elisabeth!

(For people who use different PCs, with different versions of Java and acrobat reader) The "basic" pdf is included in the online edition bundle?

    Moreno,

Sure! Just include that in the "notes" section on PayPal, if you think you need the basic PDF as well.

Sold! I just paid the $13.00, but the paypal page didn't have any "notes" section to fill (I am the only one who has a lot of difficulties with paypal lately?), so please send me the basic version, too.

    Hi Elisabeth!

Seeing that you had to answer my first question (about the terrible appendix B, the flowchart of snappish doom) by e-mail and then in the forum, maybe for some common question it's better to use directly the forum... ;-)

    1) Checking (after sending you the last e-mail) I saw that the java application included with the Online Play edition is the same one Dave Cleaver did for the playtest draft #2. The differences with the published edition aren't many, but they are enough to confuse players that don't know them. Do you know if Dave will upgrade his application to the new edition of the game? Or you know someone who will?

    2) In this thread you talked about the printed book having 50-60 pages, 10-20 more than the pdf edition. It's because of different layouts and page division, or there is some different material in the printed edition?

    3) this is not a question but an observation: are you familiar with chess notations? Because It's complicated could be played by e-mail or by forum even without a image of the board, you could send your "moves" like O2-D6 (line from Oddity 2 to Dysfunction 6) ;-)

The original one was updated at some point based on feedback from Elizabeth. I swapped out the map for a newer one. I'm assuming that it is up to date with the current version, but Elizabeth would be able to tell us more.

I seem to remember that the 50-60 pages was an estimate before the layout had been done, so I'd imagine it just came out shorter when laid out.

I don't really know, of course, but that sure as hell doesn't stop me having an opinion about it.

She probably is away for the weekend... :-)

The version of the application enclosed with the "online play" version has a crc-32 of 2AFC6287, it has the Oddities in the higher part of the sheet and the dysfunctions in the lower part, has 10 Oddities instead of 8, and when you drag a line from an oddity to a dysfunction (or the other way around) it color a quarter only in the destination box and not in the starting box, too. It's the last version you did?

That sounds like the version we played at DexCon.

I talked to Elizabeth, and I will be making a minor tweak to the application. I just need to buy a hard drive enclosure, because I believe the app is currently on my dead computer's hard drive.
