In the Stuff to Watch thread Kevin posted a link to Wordle, a service that makes word clouds out of an text you give it. The two examples he gave were the PHP and the DMG and the differences between the two clouds where so obvious and interesting, I thought this would deserve its own thread. The basic idea is: Take some game text, run it through Wordle and post what comes out.

Here's my first attempt at a world cloud for Dogs in the Vineyard:

Looking forward to see other clouds. :)

Interesting that the word "Roach" doesn't appear by itself, Jason. At least not that I can see.

Looking over the PHB cloud really tells you what the game is like, doesn't it? Fascinating.

I'm very amused, and somewhat happy, to see that "may" is larger than "can" is larger than "must." You might also find "Rulestextgoeshere" for the bits that I haven't finished writing yet...

Hey, what could it possibly mean that some pictures show up with the words at right angles to each other, and others with the words all slanty? Stylistic or linguistic differences?

Bill there are settings that you can tweak for color and text alignment and stuff. Although it'd be really cool if it actually did indicate something about the text in question.

You know? Looking at Jack's in particular, I'm thinking the tool should count plural word forms as singular. I mean, ORK is bigger than GODS, in GOG?!? You realize how many Goblins it would cost an Ork, to say that out loud in a game?!?! :D

I processed some more of my own games:

    Hellball Architects of Aztlan Sex/Magic

    Observations:

I wrote Hellball for the MACE Iron Game Chef, Architects of Aztlan for Reversed-Engineer, and Sex/Magic for this year's Game Chef.

I use the word "can" too much.

Some of these games (like Hellball) seem fun to play from the most common words. Some of these games (like S/M) seem more like instruction manuals. Our games should seem fun to play from a brief skim of the pages, just from most common words.

So far every book I've ever written has the word "can" in very large letters on wordle.

I must stop saying can. I know I can.
