    Thank you.

Only 1000 games to be made *ever*? Wow. That's gutsy.

EDIT: Either that, or I'm a barking moron, and the 1000 only refers to the DELUXE edition.

I really admire the game design here, even though I loathe everything the game's about. It's about things I hate, but it's done so well I can't help but like it a little bit. It gives me that same deeply conflicted tingle as The Dark Knight.
  2.  # 5
    Haha, I smell a quote!

Anyway, thanks. :) Tingle is good! And remember, a game is not what it's about, it's about HOW it's about it.

The game is looking amazing. The design's been solid for awhile now, but we're seeing artwork from all over and it's weird/cool/beautiful/scary/funny... just like the world itself.

    I am so excited.

Though the limited run for the deluxe edition also has me nervous. Guess I'll have to order early!

    Order early, order often.

Can't wait for this! Looks great guys.

Awesome. I'm really looking forward to seeing how people respond to the very cool fiddly bits. I potentially see a big future for small press rpgs that have lots of fiddly bits in the mode of new school board games, starting with FreeMarket and Empire of Dust and exploding from there. Hopefully we'll get more POD options for fiddly bits in the near future, which will help.

Luke and Jared, I admire your ability to see something this big through to the end.

I'm a fan of Neal Stephenson, so I'm watching with anticipation.

    Mark,

Thanks! Man, it has not been easy. But I think Crane and I have something that's fucking awesome and I can't wait for people to play it.

Will I be able to play Snow Crash with this? I mean, I doubt it, given the lack of space station in Snow Crash, but I mean, what elements of Snow Crash (if any) will translate into the game?

From what I've heard so far I'd say more "Diamond Age" than "Snow Crash", but I suppose Jared will explain more :)
  10.  # 18
I almost put that in my question, about Diamond Age. I've never finished Diamond Age, so I was hoping I could stick with neuro-linguistic hacking stories about people who affect each other but don't meet each other (or meet for very little periods of time). Heh, I guess I just described Shock:
  11.  # 19
Yes. We have rules for meme engineering, kinesics (ala Schismatrix) social hacking, and other such concepts. Not only do characters not have to meet one another, you can play a character who never leaves his room.
  12.  # 20
Fantastic! I'm more excited now (although I'm not completely sure why)!
  13.  # 21
So, if the idea is that real life has become more like the Internet, are we going to run afoul of real-life 4chan memes and tentaporn spam-people? Can we hack someone so that they become a real-life viagra ad?

    Yes, yes and yes.

    Misuba: No.

    Spooky,

There's an experience in FM that concerns spreading, critiquing and killing trends (we call it Thin Slicing). There's also another (Ephemera) that's used to generates memes that can "infect" the populace (basically this experience covers the production of artistic works, as well as handling journalism or oration -- be it philosophical, religious or political).

Oh, and Mark, we also have rules to creatre your own Stephenson-inspired tech (smart-wheels, katanas, rat-things) and social systems (like phyles and burbclaves).

  18.  # 27
Don't worry, Spooky... we'll reserve a Ripley pod for you. :)

I'm also going to try and get the pre-release character sheet online soon.
  19.  # 28
I will add my voice to the many and say that I am also really looking forward to this and I'm thrilled that it came together after all. I've heard some great things from a few of the playtesters and the examples are intriguing - who knew key lime pie could be the center of such drama?

Are either or both of you guys going to be running this at Dreamation?
  20.  # 29
I played it, and it was incredibly fun. I can't wait to have it for my very own.
  21.  # 30

I"m sad to say that I've only read Snow Crash. Is there a bibliography of essential texts that I can look over and get more acquainted with for this game?
  26.  # 36
Definitely read Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow, Everyone in Silico by Jim Munroe, and Schismatrix by Bruce Sterling. Those three are good starts. Funny, most of our inspiration has come from non-fiction books. The Tipping Point and Pirate Utopias being two huge sources of inspiration.
  27.  # 37
Pirate Utopias. Nuff said - I'm buying that right now. No really, it sounds quite interesting! Heard some good things about The Tipping Point too - I imagine both books would make great fodder for games (and so they have, apparently). :)
  28.  # 38
I believe some if not all of Pirate Utopias is online for free.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_utopia

Luke and I will have a more complete bibliography up soon.

Any plans for a non-deluxe non-limited run? Otherwise I'll have to pirate a copy and make my own chits in a few years when I'm gaming again.
  29.  # 40
We're going to put up a complete PDF containing rules, character sheets and templates for the cards and tokens for those who want to create their own sets. For the lucky few, they'll get the high quality, limited edition with a pad of color character sheets, two die-cut books, five decks of die-cut cards and colorful plastic tokens. It's the future!
  30.  # 41
Character sheet and reading list are now up on project-donut.com.
  31.  # 42
Ooo. Neat! I like the idea of short term & long term memories with somewhat strict requirements for content. And I think I'm really going to enjoy using the cards. Completely different game, but the card use in Misery Bubblegum is super-fun. Interesting but limited options = creativity.
  32.  # 43
Memories are how you improve. And they're mutable... able to be created, removed, implanted, infected and upgraded.
  33.  # 44
mutable memories = HOT! I think I love this game already.
  34.  # 45
I think I want to live in this world...

IE is old tech. FreeMarket might be incompatible with lame, 20th century technology.

    I have an odd question.

The superuser has a GM role in this game, correct? And the 'stats' in this game are game-world things that characters can reference, right?

Assuming those are right, is the superuser a 'character' in the game as well? With defined stats? Can characters in the game rise to the level of superuser and effectively take over?

I ask because I had a weird dream that I was GMing FreeMarket, and one of my players asked me a question about the game, and for some reason I answered her 'in character.' Like the superuser was a moderator on a website, and could respond to a post on a messageboard. Can that actually happen in this game?

Also, can we get extra thumbs by playing?
  50.  # 68
The superuser plays NPCs, the Aggregate and "fortune." The superuser can get Attaboys! (a kind of fan mail-esque mechanic that rewards interesting/humorous/intelligent play) but doesn't have his own game stats independent of NPCs he plays (ie: flow, experiences, memories). That said, the game is fluid enough that players can drop into the superuser position between games as the group's MRCZ changes and evolves.

Extra-thumbs may be included in the deluxe-super-ultra-mega version, due sometime in the 22nd century. :)

  53.  # 71
In FreeMarket, Spooky could get you some extra thumbs. And after he mobs them and gifts them to Mike, he'd be up 10 flow.

  57.  # 76
We're working on pricing for the box set and premiums for pre-orders. More info is in the works but we're not ready quite yet.
  58.  # 77
    Jared:

More examples on the types of technology the people of FreeMarket have at their disposal, sources where that type of technology is discussed so that the players know what the hell they're talking about, and how that impacts or doesn't impact gameplay.

Also, maybe a little bit of what the world outside of FreeMarket must be like. After all, you can apparently play an immigrant to the station. Why would they immigrate there?

    Questions for the show, btw.
  59.  # 78
Project Donut has a few updates, including some linkage to bands Luke and I listen to while working on FreeMarket, as well as a list of contributors supplying art and other support. To cap it off, a pic of a recycler done by Christopher Moeller.
