[Diaspora] Help make my free iPhone cluster database and creation tool a reality!

edited September 2010 in Directed Promotion
Hello folks! As some of you may know, I've been working on an iPhone version of my PC-based cluster generation program for Diaspora. It's now reached a point where I am almost ready to release it, but I first need to join the Apple developer program. To this end, I'm trying to raise a bit of cash. If I manage to raise enough, the app will be downloadable for free on the Apple Store, so you might think of it like paying in advance.

You can check out more information and details at the project's funding page:

Thanks for reading!

  • Needs larger amounts!
  • Looks fab - donated!
(For some reason the page still says $0 raised)

    Per
  • I'd buy that for a dollar!

Except I couldn't - looks like GoFundMe is having problems. I'll try again later today.

Your payment can't be completed. Please return to the participating website and try again.

I had the same problem as John Powell. My PayPal balance is fine, so I guess it is on GoFundMe's side. Let me know whent it's cleared up as I'd like to contribute.

edit: to add, it does seem to talk to PayPal as it takes me there and allows me to change the account in PayPal, but when I click to actually make the payment, I get "Your payment can't be completed. Please return to the participating website and try again." with GoFundMe at the top (though we are in PayPal at this point).
  • To everyone that tried and failed, my deepest thanks. Seems that GoFundMe has issues. Please keep an eye on your PayPal balances and make sure they don't rip you off. As it happens, a kind benefactor has stepped in and offered to pay the whole lot in one go, independently of the website. So I've removed the fund, and tomorrow (when Apple's developer site will hopefully be working again) I'll get my application for membership sorted out.

Again thanks to everyone, and sorry that GoFundMe didn't work out so well. I'd have used Kickstarter, but they don't accept people without a US bank account.

Funny you should say that, as I do have an Android-capable handset and a copy of Eclipse Ganymede lying around the place. Maybe at some point in the future I'll dig the Java out again and port it, but the interface will need a complete overhaul to make up for the lack of multitouch. One thing at a time, though.

Congrats! And I'm not worried about my repeated tries showing up at a later date - PayPal has never crossed me yet.

    Brad,

Just for a data point, I don't know what country my PayPal account was set to, but the currency was Canadian. I've had both Canadian and U.S. currency, but I assume that the account is "in" Canada.

And Ash, congrats! Good luck with your work going forward. I really wanted to get my cluster in there, but I'm glad you'll be getting this app out.
  • Color me psyched. I can't wait for the app to go live, especially now that I hear that the iPad OS update in November will add wi-fi printing to the device.

I can't promise I'll be able to support that functionality natively, but I'll look into it. I've yet to download the most recent OS update. Over 2 gigs every single time and they keep on making tiny changes... why can't they make a smaller 'patch' download? Grrr... I might even wait for update 4.1 rather than messing around with 4.0.2. I want to get the app out of the doors long before November strikes though, so that may have to be a later update.

  • Oh yeah, I was only thinking of that as a long-term update possibility. :)
  • Will you be able to rename the cluster fields, like for instance change Tech to Magic if you were doing a Fantasy hack?

Regardless, this is awesome and looking forward to using it!

I honestly hadn't thought of it, but it's not difficult. I'll build it into the 'display options'.

  • This is wonderful. Congratulations, Ash.
  • This is awesome. That dude on the bus in front of you? He's building star systems on his phone. Truly we live in the age of wonders.

    That is beyond rad, thanks!
  • Quick update, things are going well. I need to finish off implementing customisable physical appearance (stuff like how big the knot circles are, how widely they are spaced and so on) and look into a couple of possible add-ons, then it's all just tidying things up and set-dressing like a loading image and we'll be ready to go.
