[GATES & GORGONS] G&G is available !

A few weeks ago, Rafael Chandler allowed me to use his Disciple 12 rules (the one used in Dread : First Book of Pandemonium) to write a small heroic-fantasy-monster-bashing rpg.

I really enjoy playing Dread and I always thought the game's rules were perfect for some over the top Fantasy action.

That's how Gates & Gorgons came to be

What is it ?

A fantasy rpg with a solid set of rules that is easy to learn, teach and play. Oh wait, you don't have to teach it, go directly to the "play" part. If you really want a slogan we might call it a "traditionnal game with an Indie game feel" but that feels kinda stupid.

So what do you get ?
  • Grumpy dwarves, overweight Halflings, shapeshifters, elves and ratmen walking their Path (Warrior, Thief or Wizard) in search of fortune and glory.
  • Some Fantasy equipment with weapons, magical objects and, uh well, that's all you need right ?
  • The soon to be critically acclaimed G&G Bloodbath MapTM for the miniature's minded.
  • 19 Monsters ! Monsters talents ! Monster magic ! Everything to make the adventurer's life miserable and ease the burden of the GM.
  • A scenario generator
  • Optionnal rules for handling Relationships, mass Combat and Ships !
  • And of course a character sheet
"So what do I do with it?"

Read the rules, grab some friends, make some characters, use the scenario generator. You can play a Gates & Gorgons game in less time you need to say "4th edition" (well, 2 hours according to playtest, calling your friends and cooking time included).

It's all here !

Alexandre, this is exactly what I was hoping for when I released the STD.

    G&G kicks ass!

The Bloodbath Map is really intriguing -- I've never run Dread with minis, but I have several (mostly heroes and a few undead), so I may have to try that out with my gaming group. The Relationships rule is interesting! I never thought about assigning difficulty to requests for assistance, but it makes perfect sense.

Scenario generator = Enchanted Broadsword of Awesome + 2.

    You the man! :D

    Maybe somebody can fix it?

  • Argl, my programming skills are close to zero. I'll try to get some help about this. Great idea by the way !
  • Might just be a problem with the Wiki...

    Mike
  • I entered it exactly as above, and it seems to be working:

  • Abulafia? As in "Foucalt's Pendulum"? What a great name!

Kobayashi, I like the phrase "traditional game with an Indie game feel". But how about ""traditional game with Indie testicles"?
  • edited May 2008
Nice one Kobayashi ! - will have to try this out - love the tables + generator - well done chaps !

'The scenario begins climbing a mountain during a storm.'

    Mint !
  • "traditional game with Indie testicles"

QFT, You're the man Rafael !

Thank you Sean, let me know how it went if you play it.

Darren and Mike, thanks for putting this on Abulafia !

    My first one :

"The scenario begins in the middle of a blizzard/storm. The trouble is mass hysteria, caused by Undead gladiators. To solve the problem the adventurers must find/Steal/capture an object/individual. If a big fight happens, it'll be at Reaver's Castle. The story takes place in the Obsidian territories."

Undead Gladiators ? This will be my next G&G game, I swear !
  • Where it says 'Changing a reflex cost 5Xps' - does this mean changing a Drive ?
  • edited May 2008
Whoops that's a typo, it's for changing a Gut Reaction.

Change your character's Drive as you wish
  • hooded halfling assassin, vengeful dwarf ranger with very big hunting knife, druggie elf wizard (+ fido the wardog), lovelorn krisling crossbowman - char gen was a hoot - now to go fuck up some snakepeople, big style !
  • Ah ah ah ! I already love this group, especially the hooded halfling assassin (and Fido the wardog).

Have you used the scenario generator ?
  • Yep, who needs a bookcase full of setting sourcebooks when the generator sets the scene so vividly.
  • Posted By: Sean ov Newcastle !Yep, who needs a bookcase full of setting sourcebooks when the generator sets the scene so vividly.
Yeah, it's pretty intense. Kick ass, Kobayashi!

  • So hows cum yer spiders only gotz 6 legs?
  • Bah! Arachnology is not METAL!
  • Just a nitpick - it would be clearer if you said to take the highest die in the first Rules paragraph.

Looks really fun - thanks for putting this out there!
  • Thanks for the comments and corrections. The last mutant spiders were shot and replaced with the 8 legs variety.

And thanks John, you're right, I corrected this one too.

I'll be adding some monsters this week. Anything else you want to see ?
  • edited May 2008
I always have the same player in my groups who won't even bother to note his spells and always want to play a Wizard. Before resorting to violence I made those spell cards. This may be useful if you know the kind of player I'm talking about.

I'm about to add a simple rule for PC's flaws and a few more monsters.

Anything else you'd like to see ?

    G&G has been updated :

    _a little rules clean-up

    _rules for character flaws

_a cheat sheet for the GM

_accessories for the Bloodbath MapTM : throw a teddy bear at that troll's face !

_New magic items : find the Dead God's tears, use the Vagrant's revenge or throw Obsidian Feathers at your enemies.

_New monsters like the Demented Elf, the degenerate dwarves called the Forgotten Ones or the Stone Hounds

It's here, so grab it, read it and go play !
  • Last version of the game with cleaned-up rules is online.

For those who have printed the older versions :

A Wizard can cast (Magic score) spells per day.

Life Point recovery : use the Bandage spell or make a Croaker career check (difficulty :7), if succesful the target recovers 3 Life points.
  • Levi Kornelsen has posted a very interesting read-through review of Gates & Gorgons on his blog check it out !
